SEATTLE - Microsoft is giving a select group of technology-savvy testers an early peek at its Office 2010 software, but it's keeping a key development - free web-based versions of programs such as Word and Excel - under wraps a little while longer.

The launch of this "technical preview" indicates Office 2010 is still on track for release in the early part of next year.

Microsoft is updating the highly profitable desktop software package to add more ways for people to work simultaneously on documents, organise their email and edit videos and photos, among other changes. And for the first time, Microsoft is adding free companion versions that run in a web browser.

Microsoft Office is by far the most popular software package worldwide for making presentations, spreadsheets and other documents, and its dominance is in no immediate danger.

But the company is trying to defend against a long-developing trend in which software is moving from the desktop to the web. Google has been pushing its own free, web-based programs for more than two years, though it has yet to gain much traction with corporations.

With Office 2010, Microsoft must decide how much software it can give away online without undermining its lucrative desktop software business. If it doesn't make the right calculation, the software maker could find itself in the same position as newspapers that gave online content away and now are struggling to replace print revenue.

In Microsoft's case, the "Home and Student" version of Office 2007 is listed at US$150, though it can be found on Amazon.com for $90. Such sales deliver attractive margins - in 2008, the division responsible for Office logged $12.4 billion (NZ$19.6bn) in profit on nearly $20 billion in revenue.

The Office 2010 web programs will be Microsoft's first real attempt at an online office package. In 2007, Microsoft launched something called Office Live Workspace, which let people view and comment on documents, but it lacked tools for creating and editing files.

The browser-based programs are on a different development cycle from the desktop programs, and Microsoft says the web versions' "technical preview" will be ready in August.

The web version of Office 2010 will be free to consumers, in a version supported by advertising. Microsoft will let companies with long-term Office licensing agreements install the online programs on their servers for no extra charge. Companies will also be able to buy subscriptions to access the programs through Microsoft-operated data centres.

Microsoft has not said how much Office 2010 will cost, only that it will sell five variations on the suite, two for big corporations and three available to consumers and small businesses.

Microsoft says people attending its annual partner conference this week in New Orleans will be among the tens of thousands invited to try the new software.

Aircrack-ng is an 802.11 WEP and WPA-PSK keys cracking program that can recover keys once enough data packets have been captured. In fact, Aircrack-ng is a set of tools for auditing wireless networks.

AirSnort is a wireless LAN (WLAN) tool which recovers encryption keys. AirSnort operates by passively monitoring transmissions, computing the encryption key when enough packets have been gathered. 802.11b, using the Wired Equivalent Protocol (WEP), is crippled with numerous security flaws. Most damning of these is the weakness described in " Weaknesses in the Key Scheduling Algorithm of RC4 " by Scott Fluhrer, Itsik Mantin and Adi Shamir. Adam Stubblefield was the first to implement this attack, but he has not made his software public. AirSnort, along with WEPCrack, which was released about the same time as AirSnort, are the first publicly available implementaions of this attack.

AiroPeek NX captures and decodes packets, with special emphasis on the 802.11 protocol. AiroPeek NX receives all wireless LAN packets based on user settable configuration parameters and stores these packets in memory. For example, you can set a filter to capture all packets, only 802.11 authentication request frames, or all frames except beacons frames. Just about any combination of packet types and protocols are possible.

RSS stands for 'Really Simple Syndication'. RSS lets you directly deliver your content to all interested parties so they do not have to surf to find your content.

It syndicates your content. It helps you send updated headlines and brief summaries to your subscribers. It is a more efficient way to get your content 'out there, so you can increase MLM blog traffic.

RSS feeds provide an effective means to advertise new content on other websites without the hassles and spamming issues of mass email newsletters.

You can create an RSS Feed without coding it yourself by using an easy to use software applications that can format your XML. You can find some excellent RSS feed plug ins at Feedburner, Feedblitz or FeedForAll.

Here are five tips to set up and maximize your own feeds.

1. Set up Your Own RSS Feed

First, set up an RSS Feed for your site.

iPhone and iPod touch

Admob has released another monthly survey of smartphone metrics, and Apple continues to look very healthy both in the U.S. and around the world. In website requests, Apple iPhones and iPod touch devices are up 4.2% from the previous month, while Nokia, still the top dog in handsets world wide, is down 3.6%.

One other interesting piece of data is that half of the requests for internet data on the iPhone are coming from 3rd party apps, telling us the impact those apps are having. Apps like sports scores, news and weather apps, streaming music players etc. are really getting heavy use, not only from the iPhone but similar numbers apply to other smartphones as well.

The research paper also sees the Android phone coming on, with 2% of mobile requests in the U.S., and is the number four smartphone behind the iPhone, Blackberry Curve and Blackberry Pearl. With the iPhone combined with the iPod touch, Apple has the top devices in the world generating mobile traffic.

Admob measures the impact of various mobile phones by looking at requests for mobile ads from a network of 6,000 websites and 1,000 applications. While the numbers may not exactly reflect the universe of mobile phone use, it does show trends that are important to keep an eye on.

When you consider that the iPhone is only about 2 years old, the numbers are even more impressive.
